Long Term Storage Suggestions

If you find yourself being deployed for a period of time, or Old Man Winter decides you're through for the year. Here are a few basics to be prepared for your next riding season.

  • Change fluids now. Old fluids can turn acidic and particles can settle and become stratified. If you also have a condensation issue in your area on the outside of your bike, then this will likely happen also to the inside of your bike. In this circumstance, fluids should be changed before and after storage.
  • Add a fuel stabilizer such as Harley-Davidson Fuel Additice according to the directions on the product.
  • Installing a Harley-Davidson  battery tender would be the best option for maintaining the battery on your bike if your storage facility has power. If not option #2 would be to remove the battery on your bike, attach a battery tender to the battery in your home or remove the battery and store it in a dry, above freezing location. Rechange the battery every 3 to 4 weeks to maintain the cranking power for the next time you ride.
  • Wipe down leather or vinyl items with a leather/vinyl product to protect from drying and cracking.
  • Wax and polish to protect against moisture and rust. Spray bare metal and the ends of mufflers with a light mist of oil.
  • Make sure tires are properly inflated, Tires can flat spot if left sitting in one position for extended periods of time. The best option would be to get the bike lifted up off the ground. If this is not an option, periodically have the bike moved.
  • If the bike is in an unheated area, lay a vapor barrier underneath it and cover it with a breathable storage cover to prevent condensation and mildew.
